I love this CD. It's right up there with The One as my favorites from the 90's. I love tracks Made In England, House and Pain the best.

This cd showcases the greatness of Elton in his new found maturity.
BELIEVE 10/10-Single should have done better. MADE IN ENGLAND 8/10-Very upbeat and biographical. HOUSE 9/10-I think it was needed. COLD 10/10-I thought it should have been the first single. PAIN 8/10-Great music, fast and unfortunately true. BELFAST 11/10-Should have been a single ANYWHERE. But it would have to be cut down. LATITIUDE 7/10-It's good, but can become annoying with the backing music. PLEASE 6/10-I think it's good, but people hype it too much. MAN 8/10-Great song. LIES 10/10-Awesome lyrics. BLESSED 6/10-Ahh, it's okay, but drawn out. |

Excellent! Loads of catchy tunes. Only Cold and Man i don't like. Believe should have been a huge hit- among his best. Blessed, House, Latitude a lot. Belfast teeters on the brink- between excellence and embarrassment. The rest of the album is more jaunty and unpretentious. One of 5 very good post-76 albums. Should have had a better press.

1. Believe **** Strong song, but too dark.
2. Made In England ***** His best pop song after seventies. 3. House *** Happy, but can't be taken very seriously. 4. Cold *** Darker than the previous one, but still good. 5. Pain *** Nice riff, just too happy and can't be taken very seriously. 6. Belfast *** I've never been in Belfast. Nice city I bet. 7. Latitude *** Too lazy. But happy. 8. Please *** Nice song, but again, can't be taken very seriously. 9. Man *** Again the same. 10. Lies *** I've never liked lies, but this songs tells about them nicely. 11. Blessed **** Beautiful, but too dark, like the starter of the album. Bonus: 12. Red ***** I really, really love this one... it absolutely should have been on the album. Great and very beautiful instrumental hook and strong chorus, what more should I ask for?!

Believe: Strong song, but too dark. There's no such thing. Best by far: Latitude. It captures the deep feeling and, I don't know, fatalism?-- of the classic 70s songs. Amazing from start to finish. Great "sweep" to it... still not quite sure what Bernie's saying about "latitude", but I think I get it subconsciously, because it really hits me, this song. I love the line about "dogs on the run" and army recruitment posters. "Please"-- another minor miracle, but I can't elaborate at the moment. "Cold"-- someone wanted it as a single. I'd like the darker uncommercial ones to be singles too, but it wouldn't sell. I love the song, though. "House"-- Like "Latitude", not as happy a song as someone here thought. Mixed emotions. It's more quietly reflective than just happy. It helps to know that this was their attempt to do a John Lennon-ish album... leaning toward stark, maybe confessional, but melodic too. Man and Lies just plod on for me--- if there are great lyrics here, then I need better (to me) music to draw me in, before I can hear them. Oh, and yes.... better than C Fantastic. And "Red" would have made it classic.

This is one of his best albums to come out during that period. In fact, I like it much better than the praised "Songs From the West Coast" and
"Captain and the Kid" albums. I haven't heard the song "Red" before, though. I guess it was a single b-side. On which single is it?
I can't quite understand why Elton didn't work again on new material with Greg Penny, the album's producer, because I think he did a great job, just as on the Paul Young and k.d.lang albums that he produced. He deserves another chance I think. |

EricB256 wrote:"Red" didn't appear on a single. It was on a French compilation called Sol En Si. Lyrics and sample are here: http://www.eltonography.com/songs/red.html There were a lot of songs from MiE that remain unreleased. Greg Penny did an interview with East End Lights around the time of the album's release and talked about a number of them: "Leaves" (about the then current situation in Rwanda), "Tick-Tock", "Skin" to name a few. Only two have seen any kind of release: "Building A Bird" was recorded by Nigel Olsson for a Japan only release, and an audience recording of "Hell" from an EEL conference appears on some bootlegs. sb |
